According to the statistics of China Customs, the cumulative export of Chinese clothing (including clothing accessories) from January to December 2022 reached 175.43 billion US dollars, up 3.2% year on year, according to a report released by the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles. In the past three years, China's garment export has reversed the trend of declining year by year since its peak of $186.28 billion in 2014. In 2022, the export scale has increased by nearly 20% over 2019, which fully reflects the characteristics of China's garment industry with great resilience, full potential and strong competitiveness in recent years, when the global supply chain is hit and the market supply and demand is unbalanced.
The export of sports, outdoor and cold-proof clothing maintained rapid growth. From January to December, the export of shirts, coats/winter suits, scarves/ties/handkerchiefs increased by 26.2%, 20.1% and 22%, respectively. Sportswear, dresses, T-shirts, sweaters, socks, gloves exports increased by about 10%. In 2022, the export of each month presents the characteristics of high before and low after. In addition to the decline in February due to the Spring Festival, the export of January to August maintained growth, and the export of September to December showed a downward trend. Garment exports fell 10.1 percent year on year to $14.29 billion in December, slowing from declines in October and November. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the export declined significantly, but due to the high growth rate in the first three quarters, the annual clothing export still achieved an increase of 3.2%.
